With an increase in the prize money pool to $60,000 plus custom trophies, prizes and calcuttas, this is the one shark tournament you won’t want to miss. Last year, over $550,000 was paid out; the big winners were the crew of Mike Marro's "Bluefin," with the heaviest shark at the tournament — a 422-lb. Thresher — and the crew of Captain Pat McFarland's "Little Mac," which took home honors for Heaviest Shark Day Two, Heaviest Mako and Calcutta winnings, totaling just shy of $200,000. So mark your calendars for the 27th Annual Star Island Yacht Club Shark Tournament to be held from June 14-15, 2013. The captain’s meeting will be held on Thursday, June 13th, with fishing Friday and Saturday, June 14th and 15th. The awards ceremony and dinner will follow fishing on Saturday night, accompanied by live music and dancing under the stars!!

For those anglers who wish to get in on the action and don’t own a boat, The Star Island Yacht Club charter fishing fleet is home to Montauk’s finest and most knowledgeable charter captains. Their boats can accommodate up to 6 anglers and are available for ONE or BOTH days of the tournament!!

In addition to this outstanding competition, all sportsmen can contribute to the studies of the shark by tagging and releasing sharks that don’t meet strict weight requirements. Last year, over 300 sharks were released back to the ocean. Of the sharks that were weighed in, over 750 pounds of edible shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches’ food pantry to help feed those in need!

At the request of many shark fishermen, the species of Tiger Shark has been added to the category of "Other Species" along with Threshers and Hammerheads.

How much money is a pound worth? For the crew of Capt. Mike Hegarty’s “My Rock,” that one pound was worth over $41,000 in prize money at the 20th Annual Star Island Mako-Thresher tournament.

Day 1 began with 33 boats breaking the inlet of Lake Montauk with over $100,000 in prize money, plus custom trophies and other prizes on the line. 2012 was the year of the Mako at Star Island Yacht Club. For the 20th Annual Mako-Thresher Tournament, the Mako was King. A total of 12 Makos were weighed in on Day 1 with Star Island member Capt. Tom Russo and the crew of the “Tomi-Chris” finishing the day in first place thanks to angler Warren Hendel’s 147-lb Mako.

In second place was a 134-lb Mako landed by Juan Baron aboard another Star Island member’s boat the “My Rock.” In third place, and leading in the $2,000 Calcutta, was Capt. Jeff Zajack’s “White Hawk.”

Day 2 saw another day dominated by Makos, as 10 more Makos tested the scales. The crew of the “My Rock” was back at the scales, as angler Chuck Lamitie’s 148-lb Mako moved the team into first place by a mere 1 pound, dropping the “Tomi-Chris” into second place. Just as the crew of the “My Rock” had finished celebrating, a third Star Island member’s boat backed down on the weigh station. Capt. Dave Meberg and the crew of the “Thor II” had their sights set on first place. When the numbers on the scale stopped on angler John Trzcinski’s Mako, the scale read 142 which moved them into third place and the celebration was on! Honorable mention on Day 2 went to Capt Bob Rochetta’s “Rainbow” as angler Ron Hughes’ 132-lb Mako earned them the $5,000 Calcutta prize.

The big winners were the “My Rock” earning over $41,000; the “Rainbow” ($20,000); the “Thor-II” ($15,000); the “Tomi-Chris” ($13,500); and the “White Hawk” ($13,000).

So circle your calendars for August 1st-3rd as this two-day competition kicks off with the Captain’s meeting on Thursday night, August 1st with tournament fishing on Friday, August 2nd and Saturday, August 3rd from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. With prizes expected to exceed $100,000, this is the late season tournament that Shark fishermen won’t want to watch from the dock!

For those anglers who want to get in on the action but don’t own a boat, the Star Island Charter Fleet is available for either ONE or BOTH days of the tournament. So round up your crew and get in on the action— August 1st-3rd at Star Island Yacht Club in Montauk, the sportfishing capital of the world!
